WHAT YOU VISIT
Amalfi Coast Village and Ceramics
Perched on a hillside 80 meters (262 feet) overlooking the Bay of Salerno, Vietri sul Mare is known for its beautiful majolica, tin-glazed earthenware. Since the 5th century B.C., artisans have used the clay and volcanic materials from nearby Mount Vesuvius to create the country's most sought-after ceramic items. Enjoy an optional walking tour that includes a look at the origins of the traditional "Amalfi style" ceramics and witness part of the fascinating creation process. Or, if you prefer, spend time on your own strolling through the charming streets.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
As you stroll through this charming village, you'll see walls covered in ceramic artworks and even some of the streets you'll walk upon are made of ceramics. Located in Vietri sul Mare's historic center is the majolica-tiled dome of the church of San Giovanni Battista overlooking the Bay of Salerno. Speaking of the bay, here you'll find Vietri's famous twin rock formations called i Due Fratelli" (two brothers).
SHOPPING
There are dozens of ceramic shops in Vietri, especially on Corso Umberto I street. Look for decorative items like large wall plates, vases of all shapes and sizes, amazingly realistic ceramic fruit for kitchen walls such as the lemon, the official symbol of the Amalfi Coast.
