WHAT YOU VISIT
Paeskatun Slate Quarry
Located about ten miles from Alta's city center, the Paeskatun slate quarry represents a long and important tradition in the economic life in Alta. To get an idea of just how difficult it is to turn large slabs into thin plates, a tour of the museum boasts old slate cabins that relates the history of the slate industry in Alta. One cabin recreates the living quarters of slate workers in the old days, including furniture and tools. In another cabin you can see how very old tools developed into the equipment the miners use today. Inside the slate hall you can study the layers in the slate, examine tools such as modern electric scissors and a vacuum crane used to lift large plates of slate, and watch a unique hands-on demonstration.

Dog Sled Summer Camp
Dog sledding is a way of life in northern Norway during winter. Not only do locals use a team to get around but sled dog races are common. As you arrive at the summer training site, you'll be greeted by a local champion dog musher with years of experience and training in the sport. After an educational tour of the camp, you can visit the kennel, meet these adorable canines and learn the skills and techniques involved in training champion sled dogs.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
The dogs are happy to receive visitors so what could be cuter than taking a selfie with an adorable Husky?

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
You'll travel through the Alta River valley, rich in trees and grasses and framed by the hunched slate mountains on either side. Be sure to look back to the north when at Pæskatun – if the weather is clear, you can see back up the valley to the edge of Alta.
