WHAT YOU VISIT
The Great Pyramid of Cheops
Built for King Cheops (c. 2589–2566 BC), around 2570 BC, the Great Pyramid of Giza is renowned as the only remaining Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The other two pyramids were built for his son, Khafre and grandson Menkaure. Although the three pyramids dominate the plateau, they are surrounded by many others. Of the three, Cheops is the oldest and largest. Completed around 2570 BC, it originally rose 146.5 meters (480 feet) over the desert, making it the
tallest structure in the world for 3,800 years. Step back in time when you step inside and view its intriguing interior. The pyramid has three chambers, one cut into the bedrock underneath, and two high up within the masonry itself, a feature that no other pyramid possesses. Cheops's sarcophagus rests in the King's Chamber.
The Eastern Cemetery
Here, you'll find the tombs of members of the royal family and the highest-ranking nobles. While the pyramids are undecorated, the tombs found here are adorned with color. One of the most beautiful is that of Queen Meresankh (Mersyankh) III, wife of King Khafre. The well-preserved colors and bas-relief carvings feature food and items she would need in the afterlife.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
There are a few viewpoints set up where you can snap that perfect shot. Walk in front of the Sphinx with the pyramids in the background, enjoy a "Kiss the Great Sphinx" pose and take a selfie with the steel detail between the Sphinx's paws, which was added over a thousand years later by the Pharaoh Thutmose IV.
LUNCH
Dine in style inside one of the banqueting rooms in a local hotel and feast on a tasty regional meal that may include chicken, salad, hummus and local pastries accompanied by mineral water, soft drinks, tea and coffee.
