WHAT YOU VISIT
Coptic Cairo
The Old Cairo area is where the Jewish, Christian and Muslim religions meet. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it's renowned for landmarks such as the 1,143-year-old Ben Ezra synagogue, Egypt's oldest synagogue; the 4th century Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church, believed to have been built over where Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus rested in Egypt; and the refurbished Coptic Museum, which displays a wonderful collection of statues, relics, icons and frescoes.
Khan El Khalili Bazaar
The Bazaar has hardly changed since its founding between 1382 and 1389. Home to Egyptian artisans and workshops selling colorful lanterns, candles, jewelery, perfumes, musical instruments and other handicrafts. Time permitting, enjoy a short time to browse for souvenirs.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
Your camera will be working overtime as you walk through Coptic Cairo. Be ready to take photos when you stop at the Babylon Fortress. Erected by the Romans around 30 BC, it's also the site of the 1,800-year-old Hanging Church, named for its location above the fortresses' gatehouse. One of Coptic Cairo's most historic areas is Moez Street, noted by the United Nations for having the greatest concentration of medieval architectural treasures in all the Islamic World. Before leaving the area, you will pause to photograph the famous Mosque Of Amr Ibn El Ass, the first mosque built in Egypt.
