Board your motorcoach at the pier and travel through Ålesund en route to Sunnmøre Open Air Museum. A massive fire destroyed the city center in 1904. Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm II led the relief effort, and the city was rebuilt in the German Art Nouveau style known as Jugendstil. Travel down the Kongensgata to view these buildings with their elaborate stone turrets and spires. Your route also passes the impressive Ålesund Church. Built in 1909, the stone church boasts one of the finest organs in all of Norway as well as stained glass windows donated by Kaiser Wilhelm.

Continue along the Borgundfjord to the old trading district of Borgund and the Sunnmøre Open Air Museum. The museum features a collection of farmhouses gathered from around the region, as well as a collection of 40 vessels. The ships include a replica of the Kvalsund ship, a Viking longboat believed to date to the 8th century. Also on view is the Heland, a fishing vessel that ferried Norwegian resistance fighters between England and Norway during World War II. The adjacent Medieval Museum boasts an archeological dig and a replica of a 10th-century Viking village.

Drive to Atlantic Ocean Park, Ålesund's superb aquarium. Dedicated to the marine life of the North Atlantic, the park features massive seascape-style tanks set into the coastline. The largest aquarium holds over a million gallons of seawater. Visitors can observe divers feeding the largest Atlantic pelagic species behind an acrylic panel that is 92 feet long and 13 feet high. The aquarium also features a penguin pool; moreover seals outside the park often swim into the channel seeking a handout.
