Start your guided tour with short walk to Ålesund's historic city center.

In 1904, a massive fire destroyed 800 buildings in Ålesund. Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm II responded with immediate aid, and Ålesund was reborn. Not surprisingly, the town was rebuilt in the then-popular German Art Nouveau architecture known as Jugendstil. The result was one of the prettiest ports in Norway.

Your walking tour begins at the Art Nouveau Center, or Jugendstilsenteret. The Center occupies the former Swan Pharmacy, built between 1905 and 1907. The building was the first Jugendstil structure in Ålesund to be accorded landmark status. It features an elaborate stone façade, a spire and turret, and ornate carving. The Center's exhibitions include a range of Norwegian Art Nouveau objects, from advertising posters to jewelry as well as a series of multimedia presentations.

After refreshments in the Center, walk along the Kongensgata to view the city's well preserved Jugendstil buildings. Stroll past the harbor. Ålesund is still Norway's largest fishing port. Your route ends at a small park at the foot of Mt. Aksla. View the statue to Gange Rolf/Viking Rollo. According to the Sagas, Rolf was the founder of the 10th century Viking enclave in France that became Normandy.
