WHAT YOU VISIT
Lake Tazawa
Formed in a volcanic caldera, Japan's deepest lake measures 423 meters (1,388 feet) and is acclaimed as one of the 100 most scenic spots in Japan. You'll agree once you witness its serene beauty. Marvel at the jagged mountain peaks reflected in the bluer-than-blue waters. Nature may be the premier attraction but the lake is also shrouded in mystery and myth. Ancient folklore states that the water never freezes because the two serpent gods who live here continually swim around the lake's bottom. And near the water's edge stands a golden statue of a woman named Tatsuko who, according to legend, wished for undying youth and beauty but was turned into a dragon.
Kakunodate Samurai District

Frozen in time since its founding in 1620, you'll find a number of centuries-old gardens and houses including the Aoyagi Samurai House, one of the best-preserved samurai manor houses of its kind in Japan.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
During the two-hour coach ride from the ship to Lake Tazawa, it's interesting to note that Akita began life as a castle town in the 8th century when a fortified settlement was built atop Takashimizu Hill.
