WHAT YOU WILL VISITt:
Raadhuus Kafeen
This beloved local establishment first opened its doors in 1924 as a pub but today has grown into a cozy cafe decorated with Danish flags and brimming with old-world ambiance. It has an expanded kitchen that specializes in the classic Danish open-face sandwich known as a "smørrebrød." This sandwich is built on a thin slice of hearty bread and layered with an array of tasty ingredients. The smørrebrød grew in popularity in the late 19th century, when factory workers would bring whatever leftovers they had at home and pile them onto a slice of bread as a fast meal that would satisfy until dinner, and a gastronomic tradition was created.
LUNCH:
Tuck into a traditional and freshly made "smørrebrød," or open-face sandwich, combined with a variety of fresh ingredients – a classic Danish lunch. Proper etiquette states that you should not pick up a smørrebrød with your hands. Instead, cut hearty bites with a knife and fork.
WHAT YOU WILL SEE ALONG THE WAY:
The second largest city in Denmark is an elegant mix of quaint small-town atmosphere, cosmopolitan ambiance, and young, hip vibe. There are exceptional examples of European architecture as well as modern structures and many green spaces. A drive past the highlights in this fascinating city may include Aarhus Cathedral, the longest and tallest church in Denmark; Marselisborg Palace, the summer residence of the royal family; the Aarhus Town Hall; the Botanical Gardens; and the ARoS Art Museum with Olafur Eliasson's rainbow panorama on the rooftop.
