WHAT YOU VISIT
Royal Jelling Stones
Set in Jutland's quiet countryside, the town of Jelling was the home of Viking king Gorm the Old and his son Harald Bluetooth, who unified Denmark and made the Danes Christian. It was here that they built two great mounds, erected two runic stones and a gigantic grave marker, all recognized by UNESCO as "striking examples of pagan Nordic culture." Surrounding these magnificent stones and mounds, are traces of the first Danish fortification, marked by concrete pillars. Evidence suggests that the massive site held extensive oak palisades marking a 350-meter-long ship (1,500 feet).
The Experience Center
Built near the UNESCO site, this state-of-the-art sensory experience gives a comprehensible and rousing understanding of the life and times of the Vikings who lived here in the 10th century. Through fun and educational interactive displays, you'll hear stories that were told around the fire and discover life as a Viking and a warrior, the path to Valhalla as well as the transition to Christianity.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
The Jelling Stones are two of the best known of all Danish runic inscriptions. The smaller of the two was erected by King Gorm the Old, Denmark's last pagan king as a monument of love for the queen. The other is a three-sided pyramid that's considered Denmark's christening certificate.
