Discover the wonder of Kumamoto on this comprehensive full-day tour that takes you to celebrated sites, including Kumamoto Castle, one of the best castle experiences in Japan and the elegant Suizenji Garden, and lunch in a local restaurant.
Your comprehensive cultural exploration of the region begins with a scenic 1.5-hour drive that takes you to your first stop, famed Kumamoto Castle. Kumamoto Castle is the city's most celebrated landmark. One of the most beloved and impressive of all of Japan's castles, it commands a stately hilltop position. The castle, originally built in 1607 by a ruling feudal lord named Kato Kiyomasa (1562–1611) took seven years to complete. Fifty years later the castle was captured from the Kato clan and taken over by the Hosokawa clan, which held it for the next two centuries. In 1868, the castle was used as a garrison for Kyushu's government troops. Although its walls withstood an attack by the rebel forces, it was no match for a large fire that swept through the main section in 1877, and it was not until 1960 that it was restored to its original grandeur.
In 2016, Kumamoto Castle suffered extensive damage from a major earthquake. Restoration work is ongoing, and some areas are still accessible for visitors. It offers a rare opportunity to witness the recovery process firsthand and appreciate Japan's remarkable resilience.
The surviving Uto Turret remains intact as a valuable cultural asset from the original structure. Additionally, the castle's main tower provides panoramic views of Kumamoto City, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Japanese history and culture.
Refresh with lunch at a local restaurant.
Then, it's on to the classic Japanese Suizenji Garden. Walk this large property in a circular pattern, which gives the impression of the scenery changing before your eyes. Built in the 17th century by the Hosokawa family, the garden includes miniature replicas from key periods in Japan's history. There is even a tiny Mt. Fuji to enjoy! A pristine lake, populated by carp fish, dominates the landscape. Fed by waters from Mt. Aso, it is a haven for a variety of local bird species.
At the completion of this full day, sit back and relax during your short drive back to port.
