What you will visit:
Stikine River & Wilderness Glacier by Jet Boat
Immerse yourself in the pristine wilderness of the world's largest temperate rainforest when you journey through the wild on a 3.5-hour Stikine River Delta adventure. Step aboard a custom-built, heated jet boat with an onboard bathroom* and prepare to explore one of Alaska's last untamed frontiers-the mighty Stikine River Delta. Guided by a local captain, you'll navigate winding channels, side streams, and backwaters, all framed by towering forests and snow-capped peaks. Feel the exhilaration as you approach icebergs and, conditions permitting, the dramatic face of Shakes Glacier. Along the way, keep watch for bald eagles, seals, and moose or bears roaming the riverbanks. The Stikine River, a last vestige of wildness in North America, flows through the expansive Stikine-LeConte Wilderness. Once a vital route for indigenous peoples and gold rush prospectors alike, its waters are steeped in centuries of history and legend. Midway, pause to savor a snack of Alaska delicacies. On your return to Wrangell, each twist in the river reveals new vistas and photo opportunities.
What you will see along the way:
As you journey along the lower Stikine River, one of the rare rivers to carve a path through the towering Coast Mountains, you'll find yourself immersed in a landscape shaped by glaciers, wildlife, and deep history. Stretching over 400 miles from British Columbia's Spatsizi Plateau to its sprawling delta near Wrangell, the Stikine flows from an area nearly the size of Switzerland. Known to the Tlingit people as Shtaxʼhéen, "The Great River," this vital corridor has served as a passageway for both wildlife and people for centuries. Depending on water levels and weather, you may cruise into Shakes Lake, where blue icebergs drift serenely, and the icy face of Shakes Glacier rises before you.
Schedule
Special Notes
Minimum age is 8 years. Participants must be in good physical health and able to walk up and down ramps to board the jet boat. If children will participate, notify the onboard Tour Office so life jackets can be ensured for their weight range. Some vessels have large steps for boarding, and ramps can be steep or slippery depending on tides. *One of the vessels occasionally used for this tour does not have an onboard restroom. Shore stops at outhouses will be made as needed. Tour route and sights may vary based on weather, water, and nature conditions. Dress warmly in layers. Wildlife sightings are likely but not guaranteed.
