Encircled by hills in a sheltered bay, Bandol is known as the "ville tranquille" for its great weather and peaceful setting. Designed for the first time visitor or seasoned traveler, this half-day excursion is a great way to get to know this tranquil seaside resort with an itinerary you design yourself.
To thoroughly enjoy your adventure be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a camera to show the folks back home what they're missing. You're free to choose when and where you have lunch, and are advised to bring plenty of Euros to cover your expenses.
Your excursion begins as you board your comfortable coach and set off on a scenic 45-minute drive. As you travel along picturesque coastal roads that hug the bay of Toulon, your on-board guide will regale you with the history of the famed French Riviera region plus share ideas and tips on the attractions you can explore in Bandol.
After you arrive, you'll receive a map to help you find your way around. Then, you'll have three-and-a-half-hours to yourself to do exactly as you choose.
Your drop-off and pick-up point is centrally located and close to both the casino and the Maison des Vins de Bandol, where you can sample locally produced wines. Prefer to shop? It's a short stroll into the city center to shop for souvenirs along streets lined with boutiques or peruse the goods in the small marketplace in the center of town.
The promenade, which surrounds the harbor, is lined with palm trees, pastel painted houses, cafes and restaurants, and offers an attractive walk. Take a stroll down to the beach and you can see the magnificent limestone calanques that dot the coastline from Bandol up to Marseilles while the harbor hosts impressive yachts. If you're visiting in the morning, the Place de la Liberte is the place to be. The bustling market in the center of town offers a bounty of fresh seafood, flowers, fruits and more.
Of course, the Bandol region is synonymous with wine, and aficionados will enjoy exploring the capital of appellation d'origine contrôllée (AOC) wines of southern France. Boasting a Mediterranean climate and more than 3,200 acres of rolling hills, the region has been home to vineyards since 600 B.C. Both whites and roses are produced along the coastal region, while further inland, the conditions favor stronger, full-bodied reds. Local restaurants and cafés serve local wines for you to enjoy, and there are also venues that offer tastings.
Have wild expectations? If you're looking for wildlife then check out the Jardin Exotique and Zoo of Sanary-Bandol, home to flamingoes, llamas, parrots, monkeys and a host of other animals in a lush setting.
Photos taken and memories made, you'll rejoin your coach for a relaxing ride back to port.
