Departing your ship, we head to Clarke Quay. Here we board a boat and start off our river cruise which will pass the Raffles landing site as we sail along the river that was once the city's main commercial lifeline. Today, the modern world combines with the idyllic charm of the quays, a union that is Singapore. The recorded narration of 30-minute cruise offers you the history of the city as you cruise past the modern skyscrapers and restored shop-houses lining the riverbank.
Docking back at Clarke Quay (one of the three that make up the river), take a short drive to the Thian Hock Keng Temple. Constructed in the temple architectural style of southern China, Thian Hock Keng has a grand entrance with a high step in front. The side entrance gates feature brightly coloured tiles portraying peacocks, roses and the universal Buddhist swastika in green and brown. This symbol represents good luck, eternity, and immortality.
Let us stop at the centre of Chinatown. Our walk will bring us to the centre of Chinatown, the Sri Mariamman Temple, the oldest Hindu Temple in the city. Built in 1827, Mariamman Kovil or Kling Street Temple as it was popularly known then was constructed for worship by immigrants from the Nagapatnam and Cuddalore districts of South India. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Mariamman, known for her power in curing epidemic illnesses and diseases.
Then, you'll have time exploring the maze of awning-draped shops and market stalls within Chinatown for bargains and souvenirs and sample the delicious food or you may want to Immerse yourself in the rich history and artistry of the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum before returning back to your ship.
