WHAT YOU VISIT
Hvalsey Church
Situated on a narrow strip of land at the head of the Hvalsey fjord, the 14th century church is one of the first Christian churches in Greenland and is recognized as part of the most extensive and best-preserved Norse ruins in the country. Measuring 52-feet-long and 26-feet-wide, the stone walls (erected above previous burial sites) reach between 16- and 19-feet-high. Nearby sits the ruins of a banquet hall, stables and courtyard. Mentioned in several late medieval documents, the last recorded event that took place at the church was a wedding on September 16, 1408.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
From the hilltop locale of the Hvalsey Church ruins, you can focus your lens on the breathtaking vistas that sweep across the fjord.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
As you motor across the fjord and past Arpatsivik Island, scour the shoreline for the ruins of old farms and marvel at the views that have remained unchanged for centuries.
