WHAT YOU VISIT
Tojin Tomb (Chinese Tomb)
Located right near the Kannonzaki viewpoint and Fusaki Beach, this sacred site pays tribute to the tragic events of 1852, when an American/British ship transporting Chinese workers to California wrecked off Ishigaki's rocky coast. The Chinese influence is seen in the building's architecture, decorative pieces and monuments.
Minsa Textile Gallery
The Yaeyama Minsa fabric is a traditional craft in Ishigaki, expressing the wish of women "love me forever". About 400 years ago, people started to grow cotton in Okinawa, this is the time when ladies started to weave the Yaeyama Minsa. Ladies would give Minsa products to men to reply to their proposal.
Kabira Bay
Considered the most beautiful spot on the isle, Kabira Bay is not suitable for swimming due to its fast moving current and jellyfish, so it's best appreciated from a glass-bottomed boat tour. Step on board and delight in the clarity of the turquoise waters and the stunning color and formations of the coral reefs. Kabira Bay is only one of two spots in Japan where Ryukyu black pearls are cultivated.
Tamatorizaki Observatory
Located in the northern part of the city, the observatory provides views all the way to Ibaruma Bay and Hirakubozaki on clear days. The picture-perfect vistas are enhanced by the incredible hibiscus flowers, which bloom year round.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
The undersea life in Kabira Bay is breathtaking! Beautiful corals and schools of tropical fish may make you want to jump in the water, but the current is fast and very dangerous.
