Your three-hour journey begins as your motorcoach winds its way through the port city of Ísafjörður. Each street you pass is filled with some of Iceland's most picturesque and well-preserved houses dating back to the mid-18th century. Once you leave Ísafjörður behind, you'll travel south with the magnificent mountains accompanying you to Skrudur Botanical Garden. To some, it's a garden, to others it's a unique place where many are surprised that flora can grow so wondorously at such a northerly location.

As you make your way along the scenic route you'll have excellent views of the harsh, broad landscape and sheltered fjords where farms and villages cluster on slender strips of land. Did you know that the West Fjords is geologically the oldest part of Iceland? At 16 million years of age the region is still very young compared to most parts of the world.

You'll continue along the northern shore of Dýrafjörður and across a large valley. When you arrive at Skrudur you'll have 20 minutes of free time to wander the Botanical Garden. Founded in 1909 by a local vicar, Rev. Sigtryggur Gudlaugsson, it is small, but Iceland's oldest and northernmost botanical garden in the world and was considered a success since it was extremely difficult to grow any flora so close to the Arctic Circle.

Originally founded as a pioneering environmental education center, today it's a peaceful setting of ornamental flowers and species of shrubs and trees. During your walk, take time to sit on an inviting bench and marvel at the views across the fjord and gaze at the encompassing wilderness.

You'll then climb back aboard your motorcoach and head north towards the small fishing village of Flateyri.

When you step off the bus a guide will lead you on a walk to the town's quaint, little church. Decked out with a high steeple and brightly painted red roof, you're invited to hear an Icelandic musical program. Then, you'll take a leisurely stroll around the town and stop at the old bookstore that features displays reflecting the town's history. Nearby stop for coffee and homemade pastries.

At the completion of your walking tour, you'll return to Ísafjörður and your awaiting ship.
