The beauty of the Chilkoot River Corridor, spectacular vistas and plentiful wildlife is best appreciated up close and personal from a Voyageur canoe.

This half-day excursion, which includes two hours on the water, begins with a short tour of Fort Seward before embarking on a scenic drive from downtown Haines leading to the Lutak Inlet and the Chilkoot River Valley.

Begin with a safety briefing and paddling instruction, then don a rain poncho and a personal flotation device. You'll be stepping into a Voyageur canoe, which is stable, comfortable and quiet, perfect for observing nature's splendor and wildlife that abounds in peaceful Chilkoot Lake.

You'll be out on the water for approximately two hours, ample time to explore the secret coves, sparkling inlets, salmon-spawning streams and numerous waterfalls that plunge from towering mountains. The Chilkoot River Corridor is framed by a lush green forest shoreline that offers incredible wildlife viewing which - although not guaranteed - is very frequent. Keep your camera and binoculars at the ready as your naturalist guide helps you spot bald eagles, mountain goats, brown bears and spawning salmon. As you glide along the uncrowded waters, your guide will impart a love of the area and knowledge of the Alaska wilderness to you.

After paddling back to shore, re-board the motorcoach for the return trip to Haines. A delightful picnic-style lunch will be served at a beachside location before the conclusion of this exhilarating day.
