When the Vikings arrived in the 9th century, they took one look at the bay, named it Dubh Linn, which means "dark pool" and established a trading post. Twelve centuries later, Dublin is a thriving, bustling city steeped in history and tradition, and boasts some of the most stunning architecture in Europe. Experience it all during this all-day excursion that combines a panoramic drive around the city with a self-guided walking tour and a tasty lunch. To thoroughly enjoy your adventure, be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring along your camera.

Departing from the pier in Dun Laoghaire, your scenic drive will take you to Dublin City. During your panoramic tour you will see the grand Custom House, which overlooks the River Liffe. You'll see the Bank of Ireland, formerly the old House of Parliament, which dates back to 1729.

Have your cameras ready as your coach approaches Trinity College, Ireland's oldest university. Founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I, Trinity's alma mater of distinguished alumni includes Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett. But even more impressive are the literary treasures inside its 300-year-old library. Among the five million books sitting on its shelves is the famed Book of Kells, a richly illuminated 9th century gospel manuscript.

Next, you'll see many examples of grand Georgian buildings and manicured lawns as you travel along Merrion Square and Fitzwilliam Street. For a glimpse into Dublin's Victorian era, you'll travel past St. Stephen's Green -once the site of public hangings.

As you pass the 150-year-old National Gallery you'll see the statue of George Bernard Shaw, one of Dublin's most famous literary figures, keeping watch over its entrance.

Combining past and present, Dublin Castle served as a symbol of British rule over Ireland for 700 years. Originally established as an Anglo-Norman fortress in 1204 A.D., it's undergone extensive renovations through the centuries and today, Dublin Castle is used for important State receptions and Presidential Inaugurations.

Very few buildings have survived as long as Christ Church Cathedral. Founded in 1030 by Norse King, Sitriuc Silkenbeard, this Gothic structure is located in the former heart of medieval Dublin. Nearby sits St. Patrick's Cathedral. Built in honor of Ireland's patron saint in 1190, it's not only the largest church in Ireland, but it's also said to be the site where St. Patrick baptized converts on his visit to Dublin.

Now that you've seen what Dublin has to offer, you can step off the coach for an hour and shop, stroll along the busy streets and take photos. Later, you'll re-join your guide and head to the Old Storehouse pub in Dublin's Temple Bar area for lunch, followed by live music and Irish dancing.

Then, your invigorating day ends with a drive back to your waiting ship with plenty to memories to share with your family and friends back home.
