Since the dawn of Greek civilization, Crete has been known as the "Great Island" and the Plateau of Lassithi as the site of the birth of Zeus, father of the gods. Situated on the island's eastern side, the plateau marks the highest point on Crete, rising over 2,700 feet, and offers fertile valleys filled with orange groves, vineyards, and picturesque villages. But it's probably best known for the charming windmills that dot the lush landscape.

During this engaging four-hour sightseeing tour you can soak up all the beauty of the Plateau of Lassithi and visit some of its most treasured attractions. Have your camera ready to capture all the unique sights. After boarding your motorcoach you'll travel along a coastal route with the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean just outside your window before climbing into the island's rugged interior. As you make your way through the stunning, peaceful scenery look out for the famed white-sailed wooden windmills. Designed by Venetian engineers in 1464 for irrigation, many are in a state of disrepair but still stand as a testament to their ingenuity and utility. Locally constructed windmills were built during the 19th century and many are still in use pumping water to the various villages and to irrigate the crops.

Your first stop is a step into Crete's Byzantine past. The Monastery of Kera is located on the slope of Mount Dikit near the charming village of Kritsa. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Saint Anthony and Saint Anna in 1333, the Monastery is considered the most important church of the Byzantine era on the island. Outside, you'll notice three unique naves. Each nave contains three separate passageways whose walls are adorned with remarkably vivid frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries including scenes depicting the secret life of the Virgin Mary and a portrait of the Monastery's founder, his wife and young daughter. The Monastery is equally famous for the icon of the Virgin Mary, which is believed to have performed miracles.

Next, is a step into the island's future. The Lassinthos Eco Park seeks to preserve the traditions and customs of Crete. Noted for its philosophy of creating cuisine and products according to Cretan traditional methods as a reminder for future generations, the Park offers you a chance to watch a candle maker make candles for the church, a wine maker press grapes, and learn how ceramics are made. After your tour, you may want to wander down the pathways for picture-perfect views of the valley, the mighty Dikti Mountains and the animals that call this area home such as peacocks, grouse, skunks, ostrich, deer and the unique Cretan kri-kri goat, which is known to leap some distance or climb seemingly sheer cliffs. The animals are free to roam the sanctuary and are not caged so you may not be able to view them at all times.

At the end of your excursion, filled with awe-inspiring sights, you'll welcome the relaxing drive back to port.
