You'll journey into the mystical realm of the Maya on this active full-day Yucatan adventure. Wander the ceremonial grounds of an ancient pre-Colombian city in Quintana Roo, uncovering an intriguing mystery at every turn. You'll feel like Indiana Jones as you explore a maze of paths, plazas, palaces and pyramids that take you back 1000 years in time!

Set like a jewel in the emerald jungle, the site covers about 21 acres of manicured grounds. It was elaborately planned and engineered, with raised platforms and pyramids, citadels, courtyards and plazas all laid out to channel drainage into a system of cisterns and an enormous reservoir to collect rainwater. The city appears to have functioned as a regional center. It was a trade route stop connecting the southern Yucatan from Campeche and Bec to the west, and the cities along the east and to the south in Guatemala and neighboring Belize.

Kohunlich's most famous structure, the 5th century Temple of Masks, is a classic pyramid whose central stairway is flanked by eight 10-foot-high masks. Set vertically into the wide staircase, the masks were originally thought to be portraits of the gods but are now considered to be composite sculptures of the rulers of Kohunlich. The masks are remarkably well preserved and still retain some of their original colored stucco. As you study the cosmic symbolism of the masks and other decorative elements, ponder the skill and artistry of the Maya and picture what life was like back in the glory days of this magnificent Mayan city. Recent excavations have turned up 29 individual and multiple burial sites inside a residence building called Temple de Los Viente-Siete Escalones (Temple of the Twenty-Seven Steps). Archaeologists believe there are at least 500 mounds on the site waiting to be explored.

Begin your tour (snack included) at the pier where you'll board an air-conditioned transportation with your bi-lingual guide for an informative drive to the Kohunlich ruins, located approximately two hours from the port of Costa Maya. The scenic drive provides a fantastic overview of the Quintana Roo region of the Yucatan Peninsula. Admire the rolling hills fringed with rainforest and keep an eye out for a multitude of tropical animals and a rainbow of exotic birds.

Upon arrival, explore in the comfort of small dedicated groups with your experienced guide for a Maya experience like no other. Kohunlich, built within the 4th century A.D. resembles some of the most beautiful Maya Temples found in Campeche, Guatemala and Belize, the two closest neighbors and, located far off the beaten track, the seclusion and serenity of the site are unsurpassed.

As you re-board your air-conditioned transportation , you'll feel privileged to have had the opportunity to so thoroughly explore a site so full of mystery and magic. And with the insights of your knowledgeable bilingual driver, the vivid images and conversations you gather during your scenic drive back to the pier create the fodder for fascinating journal entries that record your memories
