WHAT YOUR VISIT
Fortress, City Walls and Shopping by Land & Sea
Set out on a leisurely scenic cruise through the Inner Bay and learn about its impressive defensive walls-declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an "eminent example of the military architecture of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries." Like many successful Spanish ports in the New World, Cartagena was a prime target for pirates. One of the most notorious to venture into Cartagena's beautiful bay was Sir Francis Drake who attacked the city in 1586. In response, the Spanish Crown constructed seven miles of defensive walls around the city.
Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas
Perched atop San Lázaro Hill, this magnificent 17th century fortress stands as the largest Spanish fort ever built in the New World and is an outstanding example of Spanish military engineering.
