Departing from your ship in Cannes, you'll board a motorcoach for a scenic ride to the largest city in the French Riviera, Nice.
Nice adorns the French Riviera like a jewel accents a necklace. It sparkles! Believed to be among the oldest human settlements in all of Europe, it's known for its spectacular natural beauty and mild Mediterranean climate. No wonder it became the winter escape for the English upper classes and an increasing number of aristocratic families in the second half of the 18th century. You'll arrive in this luxurious city to visit the first stop of your day's adventure, the Matisse Museum.
You'll find the museum housed in a striking 17th-century villa. Matisse himself established the museum in 1952 and also defined the way his works should be arranged. Inside you'll see displays of Matisse's personal possessions along with his art. You'll get to observe the artist's evolution from his cautious early paintings to the vibrant and liberated brushstrokes inspired by Mediterranean light, and the colorful cut-outs he created toward the end of his life.
After your visit, you'll re-board your motorcoach and head to Eze, a charming medieval village perched like an eagle's nest on a narrow rocky peak overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The ancient fortified village is still crowned with the ruins of its 12th-century fortified castle. Here you'll have the opportunity to visit a perfume factory (time permitting) and choose a fragrance that's perfect for you before it's time to move on to your next stop, Monaco and Monte Carlo.
You'll arrive at the Exotic Gardens of Monaco. This municipal garden located along the side of a cliff is home to over a thousand species of cacti and other succulent plants. Many of them are part of a collection started at the turn of the 20th century and have reached giant proportions. The view is an exceptional panorama of the Principality and the French and Italian Rivieras.
You'll transfer to a city bus which will take you to Casino Square, Monte Carlo. There you'll enjoy a delicious gourmet lunch at The Café de Paris before stopping for a photo of the legendary Casino, Monte Carlo's crown jewel for photos. Charles Garnier, who designed the Paris Opera House, designed the casino in 1878. The exterior is stunning, with an 'atrium' paved in marble and surrounded by 28 towering onyx columns, and the famous terraces and gardens which offer stunning views of the sea.
Returning to the bus, you'll go to Old Monaco. Once there, you'll have some free time to independently enjoy the sights and do a little shopping. You may choose to visit St. Nicholas Cathedra on your own, the final resting place of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier. Take photos of the Royal Palace, which faces the Place du Palais and still retains its medieval towers.
Your exciting day of discovery and luxury concludes as you return to the comfort of your motorcoach for the ride back to Cannes and your ship.
