What you will visit:

Mdina
The former capital of Malta, Mdina (pronounced um-DEE-na) is a medieval walled city perched on a hilltop like a wedding cake and surrounded by bastions and ramparts. Often called the "Silent City," Mdina is sleepy and serene, and a walk through the town is like stepping back in time. In this pedestrian-friendly city, residents and deliverymen are the only ones allowed to drive. Enter the city via the ornate Mdina Gate built in 1724 and stroll through Mdina and along the ramparts that envelope the city, strategically built on a high plateau for protection. Continue through the narrow medieval streets, admire the baroque architecture of the Cathedral of St. Paul, step into Malta's Natural History Museum and marvel at the exceptionally preserved Palazzo Falson, a medieval mansion that offers a glimpse of aristocratic life.
What you will see along the way:
The old island capital, Mdina has been inhabited since the 8th century B.C., when Phoenicians founded the city on one of the island's highest points-and furthest inland from the sea. Take in the views as you travel a 30-minute route. Once in Mdina, see the sights on foot or by horse-drawn carriage and travel atmospheric lanes, deliberately angled, within this stunning, walled medieval city.
Shopping:
During independent exploration, you'll have an opportunity to shop for mementos such as blown glass objets d'art, delicious Maltese nougat, and pottery and ceramic goods.
Snack/Lunch:
At your own expense, sample the wonderful food available at a variety of price points. Local delicacies include pastizzi, small savory pastries stuffed with cheese, and ftira, a Maltese sandwich, which consists of a round loaf of fresh bread with various tasty fillings.
