What you will visit:
San Anton Gardens
Considered to be the most famous piece of landscape art in Malta, the San Anton Gardens are located in Balzan, next to the presidential palace. Exotic foliage, glistening water features complete with graceful swans, and manicured lawns are a haven of tranquility. A walk through this picturesque enclave is a chance to photograph colorful blooms and centuries-old trees from around the world.
Mdina (walking tour)
Mdina, (pronounced um-DEE-na) is the former capital of Malta. This medieval walled city, perched on a hilltop like a wedding cake and surrounded by bastions and ramparts, has amazing views of the surrounding villages and the Mediterranean Sea. Often called the "Silent City," Mdina is sleepy and serene, and a walk through the town is like stepping back in time. Your guide will lead you down narrow alleys, offering fascinating commentary and pointing out the top attractions and stellar views.
Bread-Making Demonstration
Maltese bread is a sourdough bread made in a wood oven and is famous for its thick and crunchy crust. In a family restaurant in the western town of Dingli, a local chef will lead a hands-on cooking demonstration that celebrates the wonderfully textured and aromatic loaf. Fresh and warm from the oven, the results of your efforts will be paired with locally sourced snacks.
What you will see along the way:
The old island capital of Mdina has been inhabited since the 8th century B.C., when Phoenicians founded the city on one of the island's highest points. Take in the views as you travel a 30-minute route. Once in Mdina, see the sights on foot and travel atmospheric lanes, deliberately angled, within this stunning, walled city from the Middle Ages.
Photo Opportunity:
During your walking tour of Mdina, stop to photograph the majestic cathedral of St. Paul, a national monument located in the main square. Dedicated to Saint Paul, the patron saint of Malta, the cathedral is surrounded by ornate, marble buildings.
Snack:
Fresh bread is served right from the oven, a delicious reward after your cooking demonstration. The warm loaf is part of a typical Maltese snack lunch that includes such delicious accompaniments as Gozitan Gbejniet cheese, Maltese Bigilla paste, sun-dried tomatoes, Maltese olives and more.
Special Notes:
Dress conservatively when visiting the cathedral. Clothing should cover the arms and legs. Shorts are not permitted for men or women. Wear warm-weather clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Bring a hat and adequate sun protection. On Sunday's the cathedral at Mdina is closed due to local mass for the local community. On Sundays, the visit to the cathedral may be replaced by a visit to the Roman Villa. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience at San Anton Gardens at the cathedral at MdinaDetails
