Board your motor-coach and drive south to Qrendi where you shall be visiting the Hagar Qim temples, a megalithic temple complex found on the Mediterranean island of Malta, dating from the Ggantija phase (3600-3200BC). Drive then to Paola where you shall be visiting the Tarxien Temples.
These ancient ruins were once part of an imposing temple complex built by prehistoric man dating as far back as 3000 B.C, featuring a central building of three parallel sets of double apses. Walls exhibiting low relief work and friezes of animals and spiral patterns, a decorated altar table and a colossal stone statue, still remain.
Last stop of the day will be Malta's oldest prehistoric site of Ghar Dalam which engages visitors to step back in time. The cave contains the bone remains of animals that were stranded and subsequently became extinct in Malta at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum. No such animals have lived on the Maltese Islands for thousands of years. The deep, illuminated cave boasts magnificent giant, hanging stalactites and a floor of layered red and bluish clay deposits more than 14 feet in thickness. Cutting deep trenches into the floor and finding pottery and basic tools, archaeologists discovered the cave had been inhabited as far back as the Stone and Bronze Ages.
