For hundreds of years so many hunters and explorers used the island of Tromsø as a departure point that the city became known as "The Gateway to the Arctic." Your Arctic adventure begins at the Tromsø Pier, located approximately 1200 miles from the North Pole. As you travel through the city, past many historic homes dating back to the 18th century mingling with modern day structures, it may be hard to imagine that the area was originally settled over 10,000 years ago.

Your first stop is the Tromsø Museum. Established in 1872, the museum is a walk through Norwegian history. In addition to learning fascinating facts on Northern Norwegian's nature, culture and Arctic wildlife, you'll also discover the traditional culture of Norway's indigenous Sami people. Art from medieval churches, jewelry from the days of the mighty Vikings, ancient fossils and a life-size dinosaur are also on display.

After crossing the bridge, you'll visit the Arctic Cathedral - a symbol of Norwegian culture and faith. An innovative design of glass, steel and concrete resembling a giant glacier resting at the base of the mountains, the Cathedral boasts one of the largest stain glass windows in Europe. Each evening during the summer months, the Cathedral holds a concert to welcome the return of the Midnight Sun.

An exhilarating cable car ride up 1,300 feet to the top of Storsteinen Mountain is your last stop. Just across the bridge from Tromsø, the ride offers dramatic 360-degree panoramic views of Tromsø, Troms, located in the northern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula, and the surrounding mountains. A charming restaurant overlooking the city and an indoor/outdoor children's playground sit at the top.

Your tour concludes with a ride back down the mountain where your motorcoach will return you to the pier.

Special Notes:

On Sunday mornings, the Arctic Cathedral will be visited from the outside only. The church may also close on short notice for funerals, weddings and other religious functions.
