WHAT YOU VISIT
Waimangu Volcanic Valley
The awe-inspiring Waimangu Volcanic Valley is a protected scenic reserve and wildlife refuge just waiting to be explored. Take a walk among the pristine native forest and gaze upon bubbling hot streams and mud pools, and geothermal craters. Then, enjoy a leisurely cruise on nearby Lake Rotomahana, the youngest naturally formed lake in New Zealand and the deepest on North Island. As you journey across the still waters, marvel at the many volcanic craters, lakeside geysers, steaming vents (where the Maori would steam their food) and rich bird life.

Rainbow Springs Nature Park
Nestled in 22 acres of flourishing native forest and natural springs, the park is home to 35 varieties of native trees and ferns surrounding pools, which are teeming with trout. Enjoy the incredible 60-foot-tall trees and the delicate maidenhair ferns. You will also find many exotic native birds on display in the aviaries, and will have plenty of time to visit the nocturnal Kiwi House, where you will meet New Zealand's adorable national emblem, the endangered kiwi bird.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Ooh and ahh over the pink and white terraces of Lake Rotomahana. Formed in 1886 when the Mount Tarawera volcano erupted, the terraces are sometimes even described as the eighth wonder of the world.

LUNCH
Following your cruise on Lake Rotomahana, you'll head to a Waimangu café for a buffet lunch. On the menu are local favorites such as hot beef ragout, steamed rice, hot gourmet potatoes, hot seasonal vegetables, a selection of cold local meats, garden salad, fresh breads and rolls. For dessert you have a selection of fresh seasonal fruit and homemade sweet slices. A glass of New Zealand wine or beer, water, tea, filter coffee and orange juice will also be served.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Waimangu means "black water" in Maori, the indigenous language, and comes from the color of the water that was thrown up by the famous Waimangu Geyser, which was blackened with mud and rocks.

Special Notes:

As with all geothermal regions, the smell of hydrogen sulphide permeates the atmosphere.
Wear comfortable walking shoes. There are approximately 60 steps throughout Waimangu Volcanic Valley.
