On arrival in Tauranga you will transfer to the airport for the spectacular flight over the island-studded Hauraki Gulf to the Great Barrier.

Get an insight into why people become hooked on The Barrier with our half-day tour.

Geographically it's an island of two halves with a marked contrast between the ocean- facing east coast fringed with rugged cliffs and wild surf beaches and the more sheltered western side with deep harbours and white sandy beaches, perfect for swimming, snorkelling, diving and fishing. The island is a National Maritime Park with a large proportion cared for by the Department of Conservation. Its Kauri forests, wetlands and hill country team with wildlife free from many of the predators common on mainland New Zealand. Look out for birdlife including the dotterel, oystercatchers, kaka, the threatened pateke, blue penguins and gannets; 15 species of lizards, including the country's rarest, the chevron skink, and don't forget to scan the horizon for the many dolphins and whales that make the surrounding seas their home.

Your guide will also fill you in on the island's history, treat you to lunch and take you to an historic art gallery before taking you to your accommodation to refresh, dine and relax for the evening. This is the ideal time to glance heavenwards to the Barrier's exceptional light pollution-free night sky and the Southern Hemisphere's unique view of the Milky Way Galaxy. If you're interested, experts are on hand (at your own expense) to share a deeper astronomical knowledge plus some of the rich Maori legend linked to our night sky.

Day 2

This is your chance to do your own exploration of this special place. With breakfast on board you may wish to enjoy one of the many bush walks braiding the countryside, wander along the beach or if you're an early riser there is the chance to take an early morning fishing expedition at your own expense, drop a line and watch the sun rise over the Pacific Ocean. It will then be time to fly back to Auckland and transfer to the ship with Auckland sights on the way.

Special Notes:

The tour is non-refundable unless cancelled 30 days prior to the cruise. Waitlisted requests also become non-refundable if confirmed either onboard or within the 30 day period prior to the cruise. Any cancelled requests inside of 30 days prior to the voyage (i.e. bookings cancelled on the Cruise Personalizer) will be assessed cancellation fees on your shipboard account. Waitlisted requests will be cleared in the order received and are subject to the same cancellation policy; waitlisted requests must be cancelled 30 days prior to the cruise to avoid cancellation costs in the case we are able to accommodate you on the tour.

Final hotel/flight manifests must be provided well in advance of the tour, therefore we recommend passengers book overland options no later than 30 days prior to your voyage.
