Description

Begin your day of adventure with a scenic motorcoach ride to Stockholm. Often described as the "Capital of Scandinavia," Stockholm traces its origins back eight centuries. The city covers 14 separate islands connected by bridges, bays, channels and inlets. Your guided drive will include several of the city's districts, each with a history all its own.

Drive through Old Town ("Gamla Stan"), Stockholm's oldest quarter and a true living museum. Your guide will highlight many of the landmark buildings and impart their dramatic history. Keep your camera at the ready for such sights as the 13th century Royal Palace, still in use today as the location for official royal business. Spy the Stockholm Cathedral, the oldest church in the city and the site of coronations and royal weddings.

Then, pass through City Center, the focal point of modern Stockholm, en route to the Island of Djurgården, a lush oasis of parks and canals that has been royal land since the 15th century. Tour this picturesque recreation area and see some of its highlights, such as walking trails, gardens and a zoo, before stopping at the Vasa Museum.

A visit to the Vasa Museum is a chance to relive the historic events of the Vasa, one of the world's largest and most important warships. Only 20 minutes into her maiden voyage in 1628, the Vasa's poor construction got the better of it, and it sank into the Stockholm Harbor. There it lay for over 300 years until preservationists were able to resurrect it from the ocean floor. Due to the unique chemical makeup of the water there, the ship had deteriorated only slightly. Ninety-five percent of it has been restored to its original glory. In addition, over 12,000 artifacts were rescued from the ship and are on display in the museum. The Vasa Museum includes a variety of multimedia displays and exhibits, and a walk through its halls takes you back to an era when Sweden was a world power.

After your visit to the Vasa Museum, resume your motorcoach tour, passing through Diplomat Town and the fashionable neighborhood of Östermalm, where stately apartment buildings and designer boutiques adorn the upscale enclave.

Your tour fittingly concludes with a photo stop at one of Stockholm's viewpoints, for spectacular views of the city skyline and its shimmering waterways, making the perfect place to capture a photograph commemorating your sight-filled day. From here, enjoy a scenic unguided drive back to port.
