The capital city of Saint Lucia, Castries was founded in 1650 by the French. Visitors today are treated to a wide variety of architectural styles in part due to the fire of 1948 that destroyed much of the city's commercial core. Colonial landmarks sit alongside contemporary Caribbean design, and popular sites include the historic old town, brick government buildings, the colorful produce and craft marketplaces, and the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.
