Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

This exciting day out begins with a 30-minute bus ride to Trogir, and getting there is half the fun, as the town sits on a small island between the Croatian mainland and the tiny island of Ciovo.

Crossing the bridge that connects the island to the mainland, you are instantly transported into another world. With plenty of free time to explore, head for St Lawrence Cathedral, Trogir's grandest building, a significant example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture that was built in 1240 and boasts an impressive bell tower.

Trogir has been a World Heritage Site since 1997, and you will have plenty of time to stroll the narrow streets lined with stone houses, churches and monasteries. One unforgettable sight is Cipiko Palace, an impressive building, that dates back to the 15th century and features a magnificent intricately carved Venetian-Gothic window.

Within the walls of Trogir you will also find a number of charming open-air market stalls, so browse at your leisure and look out for local craftsman who often sell their wares here.

Make your way back to the bus for the brief bus ride back to Split where you will discover treasures old and new.
Split is the largest Dalmatian city and is at least 1,700 years old, although further archaeological research suggests that is might go back as far as the 6th century BC.

Take your time touring Diocletian's Palace, which is in fact a walled town boasting shops, restaurants and at thriving business community. Entering the palace through the impressive arches, you will be able to roam the open courtyards and narrow cobbled lanes. Built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian in preparation for his retirement in 305 AD, it is adjecent to St Dominus's Cathedral, which was named after Saint Duje the patron saint of Split and boasts a colonnade of Corinthium columns. From the cathedral you will be able to admire amazing views of the city and Adriatic sea. Visit the Treasury, which houses an impressive collection of jeweled artifacts, paintings, and manuscripts. Your adventure continues at the nearby Temple of Jupiter, a 4th century structure that boasts imposing stone columns.

After immersing yourself in this ancient world, take time to wander the streets of the Old Town and browse the many shops, open-air markets and cafes. You may want to stop for some refreshment or maybe window shop at the high end shops on the marble-paved Marmontova Street. Take time out to stop for refreshments at one of the many cafes that line the streets, or move on to the historic People's Square, to photograph the imposing Town Hall building, which is painted bright red.
Then, laden with souvenirs and gifts for the folks back home, it's time to return to the bus for the return trip back to the ship.
