What You Visit:
Walking Tour with Costumed Madam
Splendidly costumed madams greet you at your ship with a souvenir garter, then guide you on a two-hour walking tour through the back alleys and former red light districts of Skagway, where women of the evening brushed shoulders with notorious characters such as Soapy Smith and Frank Reid. You'll hear stories of Klondike Kate, Cad Wilson and Diamond Lil and will pass historic and haunted Gold Rush buildings as you learn of Skagway's rich history. Created by Red Onion Saloon owner and "head madam," Jan Wrentmore, to tell the stories of the strong and courageous women of the past, this excursion celebrates their enterprising spirit.
Red Onion Saloon
Built in 1897, the Red Onion was the town's finest bordello, and visitors today are regaled with tales of the enterprising women who worked the establishment. On the second floor, there is an intriguing brothel museum. Guests may explore the hallway, bedrooms and priceless artifacts left behind by the "soiled doves" of yesteryear. The tour ends at the saloon so you'll have time to visit the gift shop and explore downtown Skagway on your own.
What You See Along The Way:
Skagway
Skagway holds a unique place in Alaskan history. Known as the "Gateway to the Yukon," Skagway played a key role in the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897-1898. Its dramatic history is still alive, as you experience during your walk. You can sense the excitement and nostalgia around every corner as you travel past boardwalk-lined streets and false-front buildings, through historic downtown.
Snack:
Raise a glass to your good fortune with a champagne toast in the historic Red Onion Saloon.
Shopping:
There is a souvenir gift shop at the Red Onion Saloon, the perfect spot to pick up a unique and "racy" gift!
