The journey begins with a scenic cruise aboard a high-speed ferry along North America's longest and deepest fjord to Haines. Enjoy spectacular views of waterfalls and ice-sculpted peaks as your onboard guide provides informative commentary and points out marine wildlife in route.

Upon arrival in Haines, join personable naturalists on an evening tour through the enchanting Chilkoot River Valley. Nestled between rugged glaciers and snowcapped mountains, this fertile valley is the centuries-old fishing grounds of the Tlingit people and home to generations of brown bears, bald eagle, mountain goat, marine mammals, numerous birds and spawning salmon.
Before sunset, brown bear families may leave the cover of forest and converge on the river to forage for salmon, adding valuable weight to stay healthy through the long Alaska winter. This is one of the most unique bear viewing areas in southeast Alaska and your guides love sharing with guests this rare opportunity while focusing on "safety around bears."

From the protection of your bus, you may witness the "food chain" in action as thousands of spawning salmon swim past the hungry bears splashing and feeding in the water. Catching a glimpse of these bruins filling up on salmon is only part of the excitement. Spotting scopes bring the action up close as eagles, gulls, ducks and ravens hover over the river.

Your guides will share stories of life in a quaint Alaska fishing village while driving back through downtown Haines and historic Fort Seward. Enjoy a meal onboard your return ferry to Skagway.

Special Notes:

Bear sightings are not guaranteed. Seasonal wildlife updates are posted at the onboard Tour Office. Tide conditions can make ramp to dock very steep, guests with limited mobility not recommended. Meal is served during the evening. Vegetarian meal available upon request. Please notify Tour Office onboard at least 24 hours prior to tour. Tour operates only during salmon spawning season - typically late July through September.

Provided: Spotting scope, binoculars, bird and wildlife checklists, roundtrip ferry ride to Haines

Meal: Chicken Caesar wrap, whole-grain chips, fresh fruit, cookie, bottled water or juice pack

Unaccompanied Minor Policy: Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
