Siracusa was once a city of great power and prestige. Blessed with a warm climate and strategically located on a beautiful bay, the historical center is Ortigia, which you will access from one of three bridges from the mainland. Your 2.5-hour tour will wind through labyrinthine streets to the fountain where in myth the nymph Arethusa emerged and where you can drink in the expansive vistas of the Ionian Sea. Move on to the Piazza del Duomo, the central square and the site of the remarkable 17th-century Cathedral of Siracusa, originally built in the 7th century on the ruins of the Greek Temple of Athena. The square is also home to the city hall, located in the Palazzo Senatorio, as well as the Palace Beneventano del Bosco and the medieval Episcopal Palace with its beautiful terrace and hanging garden. Marvel at these remarkable sites. Return to port with a greater understanding of this baroque masterpiece.
