Departing your ship and head to Clarke Quay. Here board a boat and start off our river cruise which will pass the Raffles landing site as we sail along the river that was once the city's main commercial lifeline. Today, the modern world combines with the idyllic charm of the quays, a union that is Singapore. The recorded narrated 30-minute cruise offers you the history of the city as you cruise past the modern skyscrapers and restored shop-houses lining the riverbank.
Docking back at Clarke Quay (one of the three that make up the river), take a short drive to the Thian Hock Keng Temple. Constructed in the temple architectural style of southern China, Thian Hock Keng has a grand entrance with a high step in front. The side entrance gates feature brightly coloured tiles portraying peacocks, roses and the universal Buddhist swastika in green and brown. This symbol represents good luck, eternity and immortality.
Reboard your motorcoach and journey to the center of Chinatown to the Sri Mariamman Temple, the oldest Hindu Temple in the city. Built in 1827, Mariamman Kovil or Kling Street Temple as it was popularly known then was constructed for worship by immigrants from the Nagapatnam and Cuddalore districts of South India. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Mariamman, known for her power in curing epidemic illnesses and diseases.
After your visit, you'll walk towards the informative Chinatown Heritage Centre to learn all about Chinese people outside China, from their past to the present. Then, you'll have time spend exploring the maze of awning-draped shops and market stalls within Chinatown. Peruse the shops for bargains and souvenirs and sample the delicious food, before returning to your motorcoach for the short ride back to your ship, reliving the color, art and history of this wonderful city.
