Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

Lace up your walking shoes and get to know Lerwick, the capital of Shetland. You'll meet your guide at the Pier to begin your walking tour, walking past Market Cross and seeing the Tolbooth, headquarters for Lerwick's lifeboat station. You'll then continue along the cobbled Commercial Street, to Town Hall. Built in 1862, the Hall features a series of stain glass windows depicting Shetland history. In the center of town is Fort Charlotte, built in 1665 by order of Charles II. The fort has been a customs house, a town jail and a courthouse. The tour ends at the quayside, but you're then free to enjoy the town, shopping for crafts and famous Shetland woolens, or visiting the Shetland Museum that boasts an impressive recollection of 5000 years' worth of culture and people. You can even pop into the underground home of a "trowie knowe," before returning at your leisure to your ship.

Special Notes:

This excursion involves considerable walking over uneven and cobbled surfaces. Not recommended for guests with limited mobility.

Bring local currency or credit cards for additional purchases.

Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing suited to the day's conditions. The distance walked is approximately 3 miles.

Internal viewing of the stained glass windows at the town hall is subject to the availability of the town hall, please note the main chamber is used for council meets and is closed at the weekends.

Depending on which berth/Tender landing point is used, a shuttle transfer may be used from this point to the start of the walk in Lerwick.
