Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

You'll meet your guide at the Pier to begin your up-close exploration of Lerwick, the capital town of Shetland. The sheltered stretch of water between the Mainland of Shetland and the island of Bressay now looks an obvious place for a harbor, but until around 1625 there were just a few huts here gathered around a leir-vik, Norse for "muddy bay".

As you walk past Market Cross you'll see the Tolbooth, headquarters for Lerwick's lifeboat station, You'll then continue along the cobbled Commercial Street, passing old merchant homes and warehouses until your reach the Town Hall. Built in 1862, the Hall features a series of stain glass windows along its first floor depicting Shetland history.

In the center of town is Fort Charlotte. The fortress was built in 1665 by order of Charles II and successfully repelled a Dutch naval attack during the Third Anglo-Dutch War. Decommissioned after the Napoleonic Wars, the fort has been a customs house, Lerwick's town jail and a courthouse. You'll want to take in some of the breath-taking town views from its battlements.

Your adventure ends as you are escorted back to your ship. Or, stay and enjoy the town on your own. You can shop, for crafts and famous Shetland woollens or stop by the Shetland Museum. You will enjoy a smorgasbord of Shetland treasures, including hanging boats and more. The museum boasts an impressive recollection of 5000 years' worth of culture and people. You can even pop into the underground home of a "trowie knowe," a mythical Shetland creature.
