A visit to Sardinia's first settlement begins when you drive along the southwest coast en route to Nora. Situated on a rocky promontory, this open-air museum reveals the life of this ancient Roman village settled by the nuraghic people.

You'll want to wear sturdy walking shoes and bring sun protection and a hat on this half-day adventure. Board a comfortable motorcoach and travel approximately 20 miles to the sun-baked ruins of this costal settlement, in southern Sardinia.

First dominated by the Carthage, Nora was then controlled by the Romans when they conquered Sardinia in 238 B.C. Once a significant trade town sheltered by twin harbors, it went into a slow decline in the fourth century and was finally abandoned in the eighth century. Excavation did not begin on the seven-acre site until 1960. Today, Nora reveals a unique glimpse into the life of its inhabitants.

A knowledgeable guide will walk through the ruins, highlighting key structures. Step back in time and immerse yourself in an ancient culture. See a Carthaginian temple dedicated to the goddess Tanit, a Roman theater still used today for summer concerts, the Temple of Aesculapius, the Terme A Mare (Spa by the Sea), and several structures with intact Roman mosaics. The rectangular bathtubs and brick pillars as well as the remains of furnaces imply that the inhabitants enjoyed an under-floor heating system.

Before departing Nora, take a moment to appreciate its surrounding beauty, including spectacular vistas of sparkling beaches with the Tower of Coltellazzo off in the distance. Your guide will also point out Sant'Efisio Church, where the saint was martyred. Before returning to port, you'll stop to photograph this Romanesque style house of worship built in the 11th century for the patron saint to whom all of Sardinia turned during the devastation of the 1650s plague.

Return to port with incredible memories and photographs of this day.
