Built in the Moorish-influenced Mudejar style, the basilica is home to the Virgin of Candelaria, declared the island's patron saint in 1599. Continue on to the Pyramids of Guimar. The step pyramids of the Guimar Valley pose a conundrum to archaeologists. Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, believed their resemblance to Aztec pyramids proved a link between the New World and ancient Egypt.
