Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

Managua is a tale of two cities. Tree-lined boulevards and neo-Classical structures mingle with modern buildings. Yet it's also a living testament to the many struggles Nicaragua's capital city has endured.

Your full day adventure begins as you leave the pier and travel north to the capital of Nicaragua. Sit back and relax as your guide regales you with tales of the country's history, as well as the Nicaraguan country side that passes by your window. From the seat of your comfortable air-conditioned bus, you'll see picturesque villages nestled in the lush countryside of this agricultural region. Off in the distance, you'll be able to see Lake Nicaragua, the largest lake of Central America, and its biggest Island, Ometepe with its two volcanoes standing tall on each side.

Once you reach Managua, you'll meander through the downtown area. Although an earthquake in 1972 destroyed many buildings the few that survived can be seen from your window including the Ruben Dario Theater, one of the most important venues in the city.

Your first stop is the National Historic Park Loma de Tiscapa, Managua's most recognizable landmark. Located on one of the highest hills within the city, the park was once the site of the Presidential Palace where Sandino and his men were executed in 1934. Grab your camera when you step off the bus – the views from this vantage point are amazing. Nearby is the imposing monument to Sandino, a city icon that stands nearly 60 feet high.

Then, you'll continue on to the city's historical center known as La Plaza de la Revolucion. Within this sprawling plaza is the Old Cathedral, which was the first cathedral in the Western Hemisphere to be built entirely of concrete on a metal frame.

Next stop is the impressive National Palace. Built in 1935 for President Bautista, today it's home to the National Archive, the National Library and the National Museum. After you step off the bus enjoy a 30-minute tour of its collection of paintings, Pre-Columbian statuettes, and ceramics, you'll witness the ruins of the Old Cathedral of Managua. Although it was severely damaged in the earthquake, the lovely Spanish Colonial façade is still intact.

By now, you're probably ready for lunch so you'll head to a local restaurant for a delicious buffet meal. After lunch, you'll return to San Juan del Sur along a scenic route and stop for photos at Catarina Viewpoint, a popular spot in Nicaragua where you will be able to enjoy the remarkable views of the Apoyo Lagoon, of Granada city and Mombacho Volcano.
