This is a great and entertaining way to learn the fascinating facts about the history of the Saguenay area. The La Fabuleuse stage show is fun for the whole family and is approximately an hour in length.
It's just a short shuttle ride from the pier to the theater and once you disembark you'll be treated to a fantastic odyssey that features the history of the Saguenay area from 1603 up until today.
This extravaganza begins with a tribute to the First Nations people. According to an Iroquoian legend, the area was the way to the "Kingdom of Saguenay," a land of blond men rich with gold and furs. The show continues with French explorer Samuel de Champlain and his founding of Quebec in 1608. Then, watch in amazement as you witness the colonization of the area and how it grew from a small native village to a French fur trading post just 70 years later.
Through the centuries, lumber was a precious commodity. In 1842, a revolutionizing sawmill was built here, and by the end of the 19th century, pulp and paper mills sprang up all around Saguenay.
Another event the show presents is one of the worst disasters ever to hit Saguenay. The Great Fire of 1870 destroyed everything over a distance of 93 miles and raged from the Mistassini River, near Lac St-Jean, all the way to La Baie and the Ha! Ha! Rivers. About one hundred years later the area was destroyed by water when Chicoutimi River overflowed its banks and flooded the entire region. It was the biggest overland flood in Canada in the 20th century with a loss of seven lives, and CAD $1.5 billion in damages.
Staged for more than 20 years, La Fabuleuse is larger than life with 100 actors taking the stage and uses exciting audio-visual techniques.
At the end of the show, you'll reboard the shuttle and return to the pier with a greater appreciation and understanding of the area.
