The Saguenay Fjord National Park ranks number two on National Geographic's "The 10 Best of Everything (3rd Edition): Walks and Hiking Tours." And it should be no surprise; millions of years in the making, the Saguenay Fjord is a breathtaking reminder of earth's spectacular evolution. Witness its epic beauty and learn its secrets with an informative leisurely trek followed by time to explore the interpretation center.

Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat and don't forget to bring a camera to capture your half-day adventure in the park. Your journey begins with a scenic 1-hour drive that takes you southeast towards the small town of La Baie. Sitting at the confluence of the Ha! Ha! and Mars Rivers, La Baie was first settled in 1838. Today, its rolling green hillsides are the gateway to the magnificent Saguenay Fjord National Park. Situated along the shore of the fjord, the area was formed about 200 million years ago. 10,000 years ago, the area was covered in 1-mile thick sheets of ice, which gouged out the fjord. Mother Nature's handiwork has certainly paid off. The park is a spectacular sight and worthy of National Geographic's honor.

Did you know that the fjord is Quebec's largest and the most southerly fjord in the northern hemisphere? Or that it's over 880 deep in some places and 65 miles long? And that it is home to 54 species of fish and marine mammal, including the Greenland shark and the beluga whale? Learn these facts and more at the Interpretation Center.

Then, after a brief introduction to the park, you'll follow your guide for an easy 1-hour leisure walk. The park boasts an extensive network of trails for day-trippers and experienced hikers alike but you'll be strolling along the Méandres des falaises Trail, a meandering trail that loops around and is just under a mile. As you walk along, be on the lookout for peregrine falcons flying overhead; and you may just spot a resident wolf, black bear, lynx or moose making its way through the forest.

When you make your way back to the Interpretation Center, you're invited to watch a park video about the whales that visit every year from May to October or you can spend free time walking to the rock shelter known as l'abris sous la roche.

Finally, you'll return to your transportation, your heart and camera filled with wild and wonderful memories of breathtaking beauty.
