What you will visit:
Garifuna Village of Punta Gorda
Offering an authentic cultural immersion experience, the Garifuna Village, located in the community of Punta Gorda, showcases the history and heritage of the indigenous Garifuna people. A mixture of African, Island Carib, European and Arawak Indian, they have called this island home since the 1200s. Here, guests can interact with Garifuna natives, watch a demonstration of traditional dance and drum playing, explore three replica huts built with leaves, bamboo, canes and mud, and taste a variety of local treats including coconut candy, "machuca" mash and crispy yucca bread.
The Buccaneer
A celebration of French Harbour life since it opened in 1967, The Buccaneer has been restored to offer an engaging eco-experience that combines education and culture with tourism. The History Center traces 1,500 years of human presence in the archipelago, from the first settlements in 600 BC to Christopher Columbus's arrival and onward. Stroll along the charming and sunny promenade, and for those seeking a bit of refreshment, the Splash Lagoon is the perfect place to take a swim in the natural saltwater oasis. (Wear swimsuit under clothes and bring a towel.)
What you will see along the way:
Your motorcoach drive from port takes you deep into the rugged east end of the island, less developed, with an old-world environment. Traverse the hilly landscape and take in the stunning views of beautiful turquoise waters from mountaintops and viewpoints. Pass through colorful villages with a more country-style atmosphere and down gravel roads lined with lush foliage.
Photo Opportunities:
Have your camera at the ready for the first stop of the day, an exquisite viewpoint where you can take some pictures of the hypnotic, multicolored ocean, the Isery pirate boat building, and the captivating tropical hillside panorama. Later, stop at picturesque Oak Ridge, a charming fishing village once inhabited by pirates, where stilts support brightly painted wooden houses clustered together overlooking the sea.
Tasting:
While at The Buccaneer eco-resort, you'll have an opportunity to sample marmalades and jams produced and distributed by Zamorano University, located in Danli, Honduras. Purchase your favorites in support of students in need.
Special Notes:
Wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent.Details
