Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

First stop at a panoramic point to take some pictures of the views and the multi-colored ocean. Then, you will continue your journey up and down the hills, while admiring amazing views of the coastline, seeing on the way the Isery pirate boat building for a photo opportunity of the tropical hillside panorama. Then up and down the hills to reach the seaside Garifuna village of Punta Gorda that is where the majority of the Garifuna people, descendants of African slaves who settled here in 1797, leave here in Roatan. A good opportunity to enjoy the panorama of the ocean while you listen their history and watch some Garifunas natives performing a demonstration of a traditional dance at the sound of their drums and understand the meaning of this old dance. Here you'll be see how they prepare the crispy typical yucca bread, treasure of the Garifuna tradition, called "Kazabe", and taste some of it. There are also three huts replicas to see how the Garifuna people used to build their homes with natural leaves, canes, bamboo and mud in the past and today they still maintain some of their old traditions like the African similar language or their digestive herbs drinks. Garifunas are also looking for different ways to recycle used products to build various articles. Then proceed to a photo stop to a faraway picturesque stilt village, Oak Ridge, inhabited by pirates in the past and now the actual home of family owned fishing companies that after many decades are still the second biggest industry of the island. On your way back stop at The Buccaneer that has been the center of life of the fishing village of French Harbour even since opening its doors in 1967, and now has become a restored establishment that combines tourism with education and culture. It offers a History Center with a history walk that spans over 1500 years of human presence in the archipelago, summarized in eleven (11) stations in which are depicted the first settlements in 600 BC, followed by the arrival of Christopher Columbus at Guanaja and the subsequent enslavement of the indigenous population by the Spanish until the English finally settled the island. Visit some shops, a coffee gourmet, a beer and pizza bar, and relax along the beautiful promenade that transmits peace and tranquility under its flowered roof or jump in its Splash Lagoon that is a natural saltwater oasis extending in the Caribbean Sea where you can refresh in the sea or hang in the inviting hammocks at sea. So don't forget your swimsuit under your cloths if you want take the chance to get wet! A jam tasting is offered on site. These jams and marmalade are all produced and distributed by Zamorano University located in Danly, Honduras, and buying them will help the education of young students without economical resources.
