What you will visit:
Macaw Lodge
This spectacular paradigm of eco-tourism, the Macaw Lodge, opened in 2011, as a working, growing and evolving center of research and conservation efforts. International visitors flock to the eight-room Macaw Lodge on a private reserve on 264 acres of farmland in a Garden of Eden-like environment. It is the grand vision of the Gordienko family, owners of the Santuario de Macao, which is now home to the lodge and the Macaw Lodge Private Forest Reserve. Stroll through this model of sustainability, with organic gardens and forested land that is home to indigenous animal, plant, insect and bird species, including the scarlet macaw.
Cooking Demonstration:
After touring the gardens and plantations, the in-house chef will impart the resort's "farm to table" culinary expertise, treating Macaw Lodge guests to local recipes using products grown organically on the premises. Enjoy a cooking demonstration and informative discussion about the country's gastronomic culture.
Local Expert:
Engage with your local expert, Pablo Gordienko, born and raised in San José, Costa Rica, and learn of his passionate commitment to the creation of the Sanctuary of Macaw, a private reserve dedicated to the protection of the scarlet macaw through reforestation.
What you will see along the way:
Macaw Lodge is located in Cerros de Turrubares (Turrubares Hills), a rural area in Costa Rica's Central Pacific region. Throughout the property, you'll take in spectacular rainforest scenery, first- and second-growth forests, and colorful birdlife that flits from tree to tree. Sky-high bamboo trees line the nature trail, while shallow reflective pools and sparkling cascades cool the area. Careful where you step: friendly iguanas often slither out of the foliage to say hello.
Lunch:
A delicious, freshly prepared lunch is served after the cooking demonstration. Seventy-five percent of the food served in the lodge is produced on the premises in organic gardens and is served alongside homemade and homegrown condiments during your Costa Rican fusion meal in the sunny restaurant.
