Your half-day of natural wonder begins when you board a comfortable transportation and sit back to watch the scenery go by on a one-hour journey to the Jungle Crocodile Safari. Along the way, take in lush vegetation and quaint villages as you travel countryside and coastal roads.

Jungle Crocodile Safari was created by a local veterinarian in 1993 to afford guests the opportunity to view these magnificent wild animals from a close but safe distance. This unique eco-adventure originates at the Guacalillo Estuary at the mouth of the Tarcoles River, forming the northern border of the Carara Biological Reserve. Home to one of the world's most prolific crocodile populations, it is also a sanctuary for over 50 species of colorful birds and a shelter for aquatic wildlife.

It's time to board a motorboat and enjoy a fun-filled cruise that takes you along the mangrove-lined Tarcoles River and to the mouth of the Guacalillo Estuary. You'll want to keep your camera ready, as wildlife is abundant. Amateur ornithologists will thrill to sightings of egrets, graceful herons, kingfishers and spoonbills. The estuary is also a nesting spot for the rare scarlet macaw. But the big attraction of the day is surely the huge crocodiles that bask in the sun on the clay banks.

The American crocodile, or croc, is more active in the evening when the sun goes down. During the day it will doze for hours on the shoreline conserving its energy. When it gets hot, it may take a dip in the water to cool off or take cover in an underwater cave. Crocodiles are skilled swimmers and can stay submerged in the water for an hour without coming up for air! If you're lucky, you'll get a quintessential shot of this powerful animal with his mouth wide open to show all your friends back home.

At the conclusion of your cruise, refresh with a tropical fruit buffet accompanied by fresh juice and Costa Rican coffee. You will have time to shop for handicrafts and other souvenirs produced by local artisans. Then, reboard your transportation and sit back and relax on your 60 minute ride back to port.

Special Notes:

Please be advised that wildlife while common during the river cruise, can not be guaranteed. Please bring comfortable clothing, soft walking shoes, a light jacket in case of rain. Don't forget your camera as you might be able to take unforgettable shots! A family oriented tour safe for all family members.
