This unique tour, expertly narrated by a local guide, is an absolute must for bird watchers, conservationists and nature lovers. At Puntarenas pier you will board your air-conditioned transportation for the delightfully scenic drive to the mouth of the Tarcoles River, located near the Carara Biological Reserve. Here, you will board your covered river boat for an approximately two hour cruise along the stunning Guacalillo Estuary. Your friendly guide will provide a fascinating ongoing commentary as you glide along the waters of the estuary, world renowned for its rich bird life. This particular mangrove forest, one of the most important in the mid-Pacific Coast, is home to the endangered Scarlet Macaw.

While these exotic birds spend most of the day in the forest, they also roost in the mangroves along with hummingbirds, herons, egrets, ospreys, pelicans, and storks. The mangrove, a group of unrelated woody plants that grow in protected tropical coasts, is also home to crocodiles, lizards and iguanas, which are often seen foraging along the shore. This once-in-a-lifetime adventure will provide you with a solid understanding of life in the mangroves and more importantly, you will learn about why it's important to conserve the forests and the many incredible species that live here. After the cruise, upon arrival at the boat station, you will then enjoy a delicious buffet of fresh fruit, including banana, watermelon and pineapple before heading back to your ship.
