Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.
Your half-day tour begins as you board your transportation for a scenic drive into the city. Keep your camera ready for a brief stop at La Cruz Hill, the tallest point of the city that promises breathtaking views of Punta Arenas and the Strait of Magellan.
You'll also make a photo stop at Plaza Muñoz Gamero, Punta Arenas' central plaza. Shaded by a canopy of pine trees, the plaza is enveloped by baroque-style mansions from the 19th century, and boasts the Hernando de Magallanes Monument dedicated to Ferdinand Magellan. Legend has it that if you kiss the foot of the Selk'nam Indian at the bottom of the monument, you're certain to have good luck and return to Patagonia.
Your tour continues to the Salesian Museum Marggiorino Borgatello, which is a testimony to the life of the indigenous inhabitants and the ecosystem in the far south. Among its many exhibits are weapons used by the extinct Fuegian Indians, and a full-size replica of the Cave of Hands (Cueva de las Manos). Its rock paintings are typical of the nomadic art found throughout Patagonia; the hand images were created either by wetting the rock with blood and pressing a hand on it, or by blowing ground rock around a hand, creating a silhouette.
The Patagonia Institute welcomes you on a tour of the outdoor Museum of Memories. You'll witness a collection of antique farm and industrial machinery imported from Europe, a typical pioneer house and shearing shed (reconstructed), and a wooden-wheeled trailer that served as shelter for shepherds.
On your return drive back to the pier, you'll make a stop at the City Cemetery, a true reflection of the history of Punta Arenas. Fronted by a giant stone portico and landscaped with sculpted European cypress trees, it's the resting place for many of the region's founding families, immigrant colonies, and civic workers, and the remains of the last Selk'nam Indians of Tierra del Fuego, a peninsula off the southern tip of South America.
