What you will visit:
Nature Walk
Set off from the foothills of the Mexican Sierra Madre and trek into the subtropical jungle that clings to the lush hillsides. Your guide will point out the indigenous flora and fauna of the region, including several varieties of orchids and towering trees. Walk through the eighty-year-old garden of local character and delight. Birdlife is plentiful, and colorful species of parrots and macaws have been spotted in this pristine habitat.
Ancient Petroglyphs
Visit pre-Hispanic petroglyphs, centuries old, that are still being studied today by historians to determine their meaning. Petroglyphs are a series of stone drawings in what appears to be a ceremonial enclave for the ancient people. The petroglyphs are believed to be the work of the Tecoxquines, an Aztec tribe that became extinct in the 16th century from disease carried by Spanish invaders. The petroglyphs are believed to hold religious significance as some images appear to reflect communication with the gods.
El Tuito (walking tour)
At an elevation of more than 2,000 feet, the 16th century village of El Tuito is rich in history and cooler air. Nestled in the heart of the mountains, El Tuito is best explored on foot. Discover the rural town and the agricultural and cottage industries showcased on its well-worn streets. Painted adobe buildings lead the way toward the main plaza, which is anchored by City Hall, and a simple 200-year-old church surprises with a large boulder that lies in the sanctuary and is used as an altar.
What you will see along the way:
The flora and fauna of the Sierra Madre Mountains are dominated by towering oaks which shelter mule deer, fox squirrels, and over 400 species of migratory birds and parrots. Throughout the day, you'll be treated to intimate views of quaint villages, seemingly forgotten by time, lush landscapes, and-from the speedboat cruise-picturesque shorelines and outstanding natural scenery.
Lunch:
Savor a traditional Mexican lunch served in an authentic hacienda. Feast on guacamole, grilled chicken and sirloin beef, and the traditional "Molcajete Salsa," made with 40 ingredients. Sample a splash of tequila as well as other local products such as panela cheese, tortillas and bread.
