Description

The Chilean horse is actually the oldest registered stock horse breed in America. Prized by the conquistadors, bred by horsemen since 1544, and preferred by huasos on ranches and in rodeos, the Chilean horse fits the classic definition of a true breed. You can see these majestic animals in action with a visit to a fundo olguita, a real Chilean farm.

Your full day adventure begins when you board your transportation. After departing from the pier you'll make a panoramic tour of the city. Your onboard guide will point out areas of interest as you make your way around downtown. One of the sights you'll see is the Iglesia Cathedral, located on the Plaza de Armas. Built in 1856, its exterior was inspired by the Parthenon in Athens and is the town's oldest building.

Then, you'll continue for a panoramic sightseeing trip towards the picturesque town of Puerto Varas. As you drive through the lush and verdant Lake District, you'll pass fertile farmlands dotted with clapboard barns, churches, gently rolling hills and sweeping views of the Osorno volcano. Rising an impressive 8,700 feet it can be seen anywhere within the Puerto Montt and Lake District areas. It's one of the most active volcanoes in the southern Chilean Andes with a number of frequent explosions occurring during the past 14,000 years, the last one in 1869. When your transportation pulls up to Puerto Varas, you'll be amazed at the beauty of this charming village. Resting on the shores of shimmering Lake Llanquihue, it appears as if it's been lifted out of the Black Forest. Founded by German immigrants over 150 years ago, the town's well known as the "City of Roses," for its tree-lined streets, and proudly maintains its German traditions, food and architecture. Once you step off your transportation at the main square, you'll have a chance to visit a handicraft market where you can shop for local artwork, craftwork and souvenirs.

Then it's time to visit the fundo Olguita. After returning to your transportation you'll continue through this natural wonderland of verdant forests and sparkling lakes all the way to the ranch. Once you disembark, you'll be warmly greeted by the huasos; similar to America's cowboy or Argentina's gaucho, the huaso is an excellent horseman and ranch hand. Here, you'll learn all about the world of los huasos, their customs and traditions. You'll also be able to watch their skills at work as they show off their Chilean horses in a rodeo. Afterwards, enjoy folk music and dancing while you sit down for a hearty lunch of empanadas, barbecued beef, and salads all accompanied by refreshments including Chilean wine. Seasonal fruit or kuchen, a German pie, for dessert rounds out your meal.

At the end of the day, you'll return to port along the same scenic route with a better appreciation of the acclaimed huaso and the Chilean horse, and their contributions to Chile.
