WHAT YOU VISIT
Punta Loma Nature Reserve
Located on the shores of Golfo Nuevo, Punta Lomas was created in 1967 to protect South America's only permanent sea lion colony; today the reserve is home to about 600 sea lions. Once aboard the boat, you'll cruise out about ten miles southeast of Puerto Madryn to the reserve. Keep your eyes open as you near the white cliffs, which are dotted with bird nests. And as the captain steers the boat close to the reserve, you'll hear the the loud barking of the sea lions sunning themselves on the pebble-stone beach. Then, you'll don your wetsuit and fins and after a briefing, you'll dip into the water. Soon, curious and restless sea lions will start to gather around.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
As you near the reserve, keep an eye on the skies --rock cormorants, kelp gulls, South American terns, and oystercatchers make their home here, as well as the hundreds of sea lions on the beach. In the water, you'll find friendly sea lions dipping and diving around you (so have your underwater camera hand).
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
The landscape from Puerto Madryn changes from city to country as you make your way southeast to the boat landing.
